After a brief and quick decline in her health, Sunday morning we had to say goodbye to Mardi Girl.

Mardi was at least 13 years old, rescued April 29, 2014 in Burlington Nc with her 4 babies Yin, Yang, Ace and Finn. As Sparkle Cat Rescue founders, we were her family. We had not formed the rescue yet (but would 6 months after her rescue).

Mama Stephanie got a message about Mardi and her babies in some bushes outside the Koury Bldg in Burlington NC (Labcorp offices) so to the best of my memory now 12 years later I recall the majority of the afternoon and evening spent trying to trap or get Mardi however we could. Babies were pretty easy to grab but she was stubborn. By around 11 pm it was time to call it a night and I was so sad because I don’t like taking babies from a mom. Even as I was backing up from the parking space, Mardi stood on the sidewalk watching me. She was breaking my heart. Plans were to try again after getting some rest because she was just too savvy.

I got home and my good friend and rescuer Cheryl messaged me and said “Do you want to make a midnight run and try again?” Sure! So off we went and we ended up getting Mardi within the hour (maybe 30 min). It was a very happy reunion with her 4 babies and Mardi was not feral at all. We ended up adopting her. We named her after our angel Mardi boy who had passed far too soon in 2012 from wet FIP. Mardi means Tuesday in French, and just like Mardi boy, she was rescued on a Tuesday.

Mardi was loved and adored and was such a loving girl. She had to live with multiple foster cats in her life with us and she loved our dogs Sophie and Sadie, and angel dogs Kira and Charlie.

We all will miss you so much Mardi. Thank you for all the wonderful memories.
