In Loving Memory of Piper “Lefty”9/10/18 - 7/10/26

Rachel & Steve and their family, longtime Sparkle Cat Rescue foster mama and rescuer of Piper (and sister Callie) are deeply saddened at the unexpected loss of Piper after a brief illness.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Piper, also known as ‘Lefty’, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on July 10, 2026, at the age of eight. From the moment she entered our lives as a tiny kitten, she filled our home with love, quiet companionship, and extraordinary resilience.

Lefty’s story began when my husband and I discovered her and her sister, Righty, abandoned in the bushes outside an unoccupied house. We became their foster parents, never imagining just how deeply they would touch our hearts.

Lefty and Righty were like mirror images of one another, and both were born with congenital eye abnormalities. As kittens, each required the removal of one malformed eye, and their remaining eyes later underwent cryotherapy to correct painful eyelash abnormalities that irritated the surface of the eye. Lefty also lived with a malformed sinus cavity that caused chronic stertor, giving her breathing a distinctive, noisy sound throughout her life.

Despite these challenges, Lefty never let her disabilities define her. She adapted beautifully, navigating the world with confidence and grace. Her vision impairment and noisy breathing were simply parts of who she was—they never diminished her gentle spirit or her ability to enjoy life.

Lefty was one of the sweetest foster cats we ever had. Every night, I could count on her to curl up near my head in bed, pressing close for snuggles before falling. And Lefty loved all members of the household equally; she gave affection to each family member alike.

She was a gentle, easygoing soul who never sought the spotlight. She wasn’t much interested in playing, preferring instead to lounge peacefully and soak up affection from her people. Lefty had one very particular preference—she refused canned food and insisted that dry food was the only acceptable meal.

Lefty loved other cats and was loved in return. She shared a close bond with her sister, Righty, whose devotion to her was evident until the very end. Lefty also shared special friendships with her foster siblings Nami, Chopper, McFlurry, and Sully, getting along effortlessly with everyone she met.

Lefty taught us that strength doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it comes quietly—in the form of unwavering trust, gentle affection, and the determination to embrace life despite every obstacle. She asked for very little, offering unconditional love in return.

Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for every cuddle, every quiet evening, every gentle head nudge, and every year we were blessed to know her. She leaves behind a home that is far quieter without her distinctive breathing, but one that will forever be filled with memories of the sweet little kitten who grew into one of the gentlest souls we have ever known.

Run free, sweet Lefty. Your body is whole, your breathing is easy, and your eyes see clearly now. You will always be deeply loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.”
